Operator access control

Also called: forklift access control, operator authorization, keypad or badge start

Operator access control is a system that lets a forklift start only for an authorized operator, using a badge, PIN or similar credential checked against the operator's training record and truck permissions.

29 CFR 1910.178(l) requires that only trained and evaluated operators drive powered industrial trucks. Access control turns that rule into a technical check: the truck reads a badge, key fob or PIN code, confirms that the operator has been trained and evaluated for that truck class and that the certification is current, and only then enables the truck. Many systems also require the pre-operation checklist to be completed first, lock out the truck on a failed critical item, and log who drove which truck and when.

Access control reduces unauthorized use but does not prove competence; it is only as good as the training records it reads. It also needs a fallback for card failures that does not turn into a shared PIN. Access control is often part of a telematics unit and can be retrofitted to mixed fleets.
