How do you measure forklift fleet utilization?

Measure forklift fleet utilization by comparing the time each truck actually works against the time it is available, using telematics data rather than hour meters alone. A basic key-on hour meter also counts idle time; telematics separates key-on, travel, lift and idle time by truck, operator, area and shift. Utilization is then working time divided by available shift time, reviewed by hour, day and week to show peaks, idle trucks and shortages. Pair it with impact and speeding events so that a busy truck is not mistaken for a well-run one.

The full guide is Forklift tracking systems: monitoring activity and operator behavior. Fleet management software is covered in Forklift fleet management and telemetry, explained. Systems differ in what they log, so check whether a supplier measures motion and hydraulic activity or only ignition, and whether data from mixed brands lands in one report; Forklift telematics systems compared covers those differences.

Use the results to right-size the fleet, rotate high-hour trucks, plan maintenance from real use and find trucks that sit idle. Low utilization on a few trucks can mean the wrong truck type for the task. The same data supports safety reviews, since long continuous operation and overloaded shifts are conditions that invite fatigue and rushed driving.
