AI safety assistant

Also called: AI assistant for EHS teams, generative AI for EHS, EHS AI assistant

An AI safety assistant is software that uses a language model to help safety teams search, summarise and draft from their own data, such as incident records, monitoring events, procedures and inspection results.

Typical tasks are summarising a week of near-miss events by zone, drafting a toolbox talk from recent incidents, answering questions about a site’s procedures, or turning raw monitoring data into a report for a meeting. Used well, it saves time on reading and writing so that safety staff spend more time on the floor.

An assistant does not observe anything itself; it works only from the data it is given and can state wrong things with confidence. Outputs need review by a competent person before they become a procedure, a corrective action or a compliance statement, and it is not a source of legal advice on OSHA duties. Before adopting one, check what data it can access, where that data is processed and stored, how it handles personal information about workers, and whether answers cite the underlying records. NIST’s AI risk management framework is a useful structure for that review. The AI forklift safety guide covers where AI helps in forklift programs.
