Order picker

Also called: stock picker, cherry picker, order selector

An order picker is an electric narrow-aisle truck in which the operator rides on a platform that rises with the forks, so items can be picked by hand from rack locations at height.

Order pickers are OSHA Class II trucks. Because the operator is lifted with the platform, the main added hazard is a fall from height, and manufacturers specify a fall restraint, typically a full-body harness or restraint belt attached to a designated anchor on the truck, along with gates or guardrails on the platform. Other hazards include tip-over when the truck is driven with the platform raised outside guided aisles, being crushed against overhead racking, and pedestrians in narrow aisles.

The informal name cherry picker is also used for boom-type aerial lifts, which fall under different rules, so the truck type should be named precisely in training records. Order pickers are covered by 29 CFR 1910.178, so operators need training and evaluation on this truck type specifically. Wire or rail guidance, height-dependent speed reduction and aisle-end detection are common controls. See the order picker safety guide.
