Machine zone safety system

Also called: machine danger zone system, exclusion zone system, keep-out zone detection

A machine zone safety system detects when a person enters a defined danger area around a machine, such as a press, robot cell or conveyor transfer point, and warns or triggers a stop.

Forklift detection technology is increasingly applied to fixed hazards. Tags or cameras watch an exclusion zone around a machine and either alert people or send a signal to the machine’s control system to pause it while someone is inside. Typical places are conveyor transfer points, palletizers, stretch wrappers and automated storage interfaces where forklifts and people both work.

This does not replace machine guarding. OSHA 1910.212 requires guarding to protect operators and others from machine hazards, and servicing work falls under lockout/tagout in 1910.147, which a detection system cannot stand in for. Where a detection signal is used to stop a machine, it becomes part of the machine’s safety function and should be designed and validated to the level that function needs, not added as an informal interlock. Tag-based zones miss untagged people, and camera zones miss what is out of view. The conveyor interface guide shows where forklift and machine hazards meet.
