What is AI PPE detection and how does it work?

AI PPE detection uses computer vision on camera feeds to check whether people in a monitored area wear the required protective equipment, such as hard hats, high-visibility vests or safety glasses, and flags missing items as they occur. A model trained on labelled images finds each person in the frame, then checks for the equipment required in that zone. Alerts can go to a supervisor with a short clip or still image, and results roll up into compliance trends by area and shift. It verifies that equipment is worn, not that it fits or is in good condition, and it only sees what the camera sees.

The full guide is PPE detection systems. OSHA 1910.132 requires employers to assess hazards, select PPE and train workers; detection can support enforcement of that program but does not replace the hazard assessment.

Check accuracy under your lighting and with your PPE colours, whether faces can be blurred, how long footage is kept and who can view it. Introduce it with input from workers, because a tool seen purely as surveillance tends to be resisted. Forklift PPE covers what operators and pedestrians need.
