Forklift SIF prevention system

A forklift SIF prevention system is a set of technology and program controls aimed at the interactions that can cause serious injuries and fatalities (SIF), such as a forklift striking a pedestrian, a tip-over or a fall from a dock, rather than at minor injuries in general. It works in three layers: detecting high-energy interactions as they happen, measuring how often people are exposed to them so exposure can be tracked as a leading indicator, and applying controls that reduce that exposure, from separation and speed zones to automatic slowdown on compatible forklifts. Results vary by site, and the system reduces serious-injury risk rather than ruling it out.

The full guide is SIF prevention for forklift fleets, which sets out the program around the technology. A separate focus is needed because frequency measures such as recordable rates can fall while serious-injury potential stays the same: the conditions behind serious events often differ from those behind minor ones. When evaluating a system, ask how it defines a high-risk event, whether exposure is reported per operating hour so sites can be compared, and whether events are linked to the controls chosen in response. The SIF exposure article explains how to find precursors in forklift work.
