An AI system reduces the risk of a forklift fatality by detecting people the operator cannot see and warning, or on compatible forklifts slowing the truck, in time to matter, and by recording the repeated close interactions between people and trucks that tend to come before a serious event. The second function lets the site remove the conditions behind those events, and it matters as much as the first. AI reduces exposure; it does not eliminate it, and it works alongside separation, training and supervision rather than replacing them.
The full guide is AI forklift safety systems. Forklifts were the source of 84 work-related deaths in 2024 according to National Safety Council Injury Facts, and NIOSH identifies pedestrians struck by forklifts and forklift overturns among the recurring fatal patterns. A vision or tag system addresses the struck-by pattern directly; overturns need stability training, seat belt use and speed control.
When comparing systems, ask what the AI detects (people only, or people, trucks and zones), what it does on detection (alert only, or slowdown on compatible trucks), how false alarms are measured, and what the analytics show beyond a count of alerts. Exposure data that nobody reviews will not change outcomes, so assign a weekly review owner before installation.
